Pope Gregory the Great on the Scriptures

Pope Gregory was “great” in so many different ways - his complete dedication to the Lord, his civic leadership in Rome during a most depressed time, his life as a devoted religious, his evangelistic zeal as Bishop of Rome (including his sending Augustine to England), and his determination to live a life of simplicity  based on the Gospel. He was also “great” in his love for the Scriptures and his desire to preach and teach from them so that the life of the Christian communities might reflect the teaching of the Lord. In the introduction to his Commentary on the Book of Job), he memorably said:

“Scripture is like a river again, broad and deep, shallow enough here for the lamb to go wading, but deep enough there for the elephant to swim.”
